Motion detection is a capability that you might frequently see in a home security camera, but it’s not really something that’s incorporated in smart speakers and smart displays. However, if you happen to own a Nest device, things will change because Google recently tweeted about an upgrade that would bring improved presence sensing to its Nest speakers and screens.
This basically means that your Nest speakers or displays will be able to recognize your presence when you talk or touch them. Presently, smart speakers and displays only respond to voice commands, but by including presence detection, these devices will be able to recognize when you’re present and take appropriate action.

Now, when you opt in to the feature, your Nest speakers and displays can better detect your presence via voice or touch and automate actions based on whether you're home or not.

For instance, if you entered your home, your smart speaker or display could recognize your voice and recognize that you were there. It would then be able to automate certain activities, such as turning up or down the thermostat (depending on the season).
As not all Google’s Nest devices have it, presence sensing will vary from device to device. In certain cases, it will really rely on Google’s Soli radar-sensing technology and sensor for presence recognition. If you’re interested in learning more about how each Nest gadget could be able to sense your presence, Google offers more details on its website.
